Rio Safari

rio safariNo trip to the Costa Blanca would be complete without a visit to the famous Rio Safari at Elche. A mix between a zoo, a safari park and a community farm, it is even more appealing if you have young children with you.

In the summer time don't forget to take your swimming gear (no not to join the crocodiles!), there is a large swimming pool with slides. Refreshments and food are available but it is definitely more fun to take a picnic - don't forget to take some extra carrots and a bag or two of monkey nuts as feeding the animals is allowed here and in fact encouraged - the kids are going to love it!

Your ticket includes free entry into all the animal shows - the sea lion show, the parrot show and the Elephant show, it also includes a "train" ride around the safari and you can sometimes purchase a video of you visit. The shows are all excellent and the commentary is in English as well as Spanish so you can all understand what is going on. The "train" ride takes you right around the park and in amongst the animals. It also includes entrance to the swimming pool (summer only) to finish off another great day

There is a wide range of animals to see at the safari including lions, tigers, jaguars, Giraffes, camels, llamas, emus, ostriches, buffalo, deer, antelope, a Hippos, Elephants, donkeys, monkeys, chimps and crocodiles to name but a few. There is also an aquarium with fish and reptiles and a parrot house with some excellent specimens. The park caters for everyone with children’s play area with trampolines and anyone wanting to become the next Lewis Hamilton has an excellent Go-kart track

Tabarca Island

tabarcaJust a few kilometres off the Costa Blanca mainland near Santa Pola lies the small and tranquil island of Tabarca used by locals and tourists alike for its recreational facilities & an excellent day out all round for your family. The surrounding waters of the 2km long island were declared a national marine park in 1986 and are a snorkeller’s paradise, with the abundance of marine life in the clear waters.

Water sports rule the island with pedalo boats along side windsailers and dinghies moored in the harbour next to large private yachts. Everyone is in search of that small secluded bit of paradise and whilst you can see the mainland from Tabarca there is a feeling that an undiscovered treasure has been found, the only problem is that hundreds of other people have also discovered it and with several daily ferries from Santa Pola and Alicante, that long lost private desert island is no longer private or deserted. The traditional Spanish settlement remains largely unspoilt and unaffected by the growing number of visitors during the summer months. The only signs are the two souvenir shops, museum and the large amount of restaurants scattered along the hilltops overlooking the sea and situated down quiet cobbled side streets.

Fish is the dish of the day in most of the restaurants with it being freshly caught, and on admiring the view it is easy to understand why people travel across purely for a special meal overlooking the rocky coastline. Through another gate to the tip of the island and people battle the slippery rocks and pebbles to scramble across the shallow water to a tiny little island for peaceful picnics and to watch the seagulls nesting by the shoreline. In certain parts the water is clear enough to see the marine life, almost close enough to touch.

There are plenty of ferries across from Santa Pola, Alicante or Torrevieja and depending on where you board the crossing time is from 20 minutes & the prices are from 11 € return
